US President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that bills to protect elections from interference should necessarily include provisions requiring voters to present a special identity card when voting.

“No debate on Election Security should go forward without first agreeing that Voter ID (Identification) must play a very strong part in any final agreement. Without Voter ID, it is all so meaningless!” Trump tweeted.

The US Senate voted in favor of two bills late July aimed at protecting American elections against interference. One of the bills suggested the use of paper ballots when voting. According to the second, candidates, campaigners, and their families should inform the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the receipt of offers of assistance from foreign countries. These initiatives were refused to support the leader of the Republican majority in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, who called them biased.

According to The Hill, Trump commented on the issue of election security at a time when Democratic officials are trying to convince McConnell to approve the bills above.
