The Jermuk residents protesting the chances of the operation of the Amulsar gold mine on Friday complained to Vladimir Karapetyan, Press Secretary of the Prime Minister of Armenia, that no public debates on this matter were ever held in their town.

A Jermuk woman noted that a respective Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) had been carried out solely at the last minute.

“The authorized body is the Ministry of Environment, whose viewpoint [on this matter] has been heard at the last moment,” she said. “An EIA hasn’t been conducted since 2016. Organize new public hearings, and conduct a new EIA!”

Karapetyan, however, stated that misrepresented information was given to the residents in this regard.

The Jermuk inhabitants responded that their demands should be respected.

And the Armenian PM’s spokesperson stated that what has occurred with respect to Amulsar had actually taken place during the rule of the preceding “criminal regime.”
