In an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am, deputy of the Democracy faction of the Parliament of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) Vardges Baghryan believes it was wrong to detain first President of Artsakh, second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan.

“I have had the occasion to say and I will repeat that I believe Robert Kocharyan is a political prisoner because the prosecutors have no complete explanation why he is under detention. So, I believe it was wrong to detain him. The court will eventually decide, if he is guilty or not. However, I’m certain that he won’t hinder the trial, if he is in liberty,” he said.

When asked if the third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan will also be detained, the deputy of Artsakh said he doesn’t rule out anything based on what has already happened.

“I don’t understand why there are can be charges against Serzh Sargsyan, Robert Kocharyan or army general Samvel Karapetyan. These are people who have shaped the Republic of Artsakh along with their friends-in-combat. I don’t believe Robert Kocharyan, Serzh Sargsyan or Samvel Karapetyan could have ordered to open fire at people. The trials of and charges against the heroes of the war remind me of something like revenge that can’t lead to a positive outcome for us Armenians. We have no right to split the nation into two and depreciate the paths that these people have taken and deprive them of liberty,” he said.
