Six people have been killed as a result of an armed attack on the Estrella de Oro bus station in Mexican Cuernavaca that took place Monday morning, the Morelos state prosecutor said in a statement.

According to the first data received, it was the targeted attack on specific people who were at the station, the official communiqué of the local prosecutor’s office said. Ambulance services confirmed the death of five men on the spot, another victim died later from the injuries.

According to the agency, the purpose of the attack was not tourists or other visitors to the station. The State Police, Criminal Police, National Guard and Army of Mexico are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.

Over the past week, Morelos recorded 17 cases of intentional killings. The State Security Commission links the surge in violent crime in the region with the struggle for influence between criminal gangs following the recent arrest of local crime boss Santiago Mazari.
