The final death toll from Dorian in the Bahamas can be overwhelming.
Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis told CNN that at least 30 people were killed in a hurricane. Health Minister Dwayne Sands told local media that additional refrigerators are being sent to the region to store bodies.
"The public needs to prepare for unimaginable information about the death toll and the human suffering. Make no bones about it, the numbers will be far higher than 23," he said. "It is going to be significantly higher than that. And it's just a matter of retrieving those bodies, making sure we understand how they died. It seems like we are splitting hairs, but not everyone who died, died in the storm. It’s going to be huge,” Sands said.
Dorian was a category 5 hurricane when it reached the Bahamas last Sunday, leaving behind massive destruction.
Thousands of people left homeless, the UN said 70,000 people need urgent help.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) on Friday downgraded Dorian to a first-category storm. A hurricane moves near or along the coast of North Carolina. Despite the fact that Dorian has weakened, the wind speed still reaches 150 km / h.
