Supporters of the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, hold a protest rally on Tuesday at the Shengavit court of general jurisdiction of Yerevan. They demand that the court enforce the decision of the Constitutional Court and release the former president.

The Constitutional Court of Armenia on September 4 partially satisfied Kocharyan’s lawsuit.

After this decision, the lawyers of the second president of Armenia stated that the court of the first instance should immediately convene a hearing and decide on the release of the latter. The Prosecutor General’s Office claims that by the decision of the Constitutional Court there are no grounds for releasing Kocharyan. The hearing in the case of Kocharyan and others is scheduled for September 12.

Robert Kocharyan is charged with overthrowing the constitutional order in Armenia in connection with the tragic events that occurred in capital city Yerevan in March 2008 and taking a particularly large bribe. He has been arrested three times.

On March 1 and 2, 2008 the then authorities of Armenia used force against the opposition members who were rallying in downtown Yerevan, and against the results of the presidential election on February 19, 2008. Eight demonstrators and two servicemen of the internal troops were killed in the clashes.
