The Police of Armenia have issued a clarification regarding the incident that took place in the premises of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction in Shengavit District and the police actions that followed.

The clarification particularly reads as follows:

“The actions of the police became a topic for heated and sometimes non-professional discussion and criticism. Thus, the Police of Armenia deem it necessary to make a clarification.

A person was transferred to a hospital following the incident that took place, and police officers immediately apprehended some of the participants of the incident and took them to the Shengavit police station, suspecting them of causing bodily injury to the person.

The participants refused to give explanations. They were released as soon as the time limit prescribed by law expired. Nevertheless, the police continued to exercise the powers reserved to them by law, performed several urgent criminal procedure operations during the preparation of a report on the incident and, as a result, the investigation unit of the police station of Shengavit District instituted a criminal case that has already been forwarded to the investigation unit of Shengavit District for further examination.

In any case, the Police of Armenia are guided by the overriding principle according to which everyone is equal before the law and fully perform the functions reserved to the police by law, as in the case of the aforementioned incident.”
