Pope Francis said life imprisonment restricts hope for the future and is not the solution to problems, Vatican Radio reported.

During the meeting with administrative staff of the Italian Penitentiary Police in audience in the Vatican, Pope said every society should “ensure that punishment does not compromise the right to hope”.

“Life imprisonment is not the solution to problems, but a problem to be solved. Because, if hope is locked up, there is no future for society,” he added.
