Armenian parliament, in cooperation with international partners, launches the ‘Modern Parliament for Modern Armenia’ program, Armenian parliament speaker Ararat Mirzoyan said at the opening of the program on Wednesday at the Armenian parliament.

According to him, the main focus will be on transparency, expanding the participation of various groups in lawmaking, and developing legislative oversight opportunities by the National Assembly.

“The National Assembly of Armenia, thanks to constitutional amendments, now has new oversight functions and should be able to implement them. After the velvet revolution, as the role of parliament in the life of society and the state has increased, the transparency and accountability of the parliament to society should also be significantly increased,” he said. “All this led to the conviction that the National Assembly of Armenia should sharply increase its capabilities, starting with staffing capabilities and ending with the opportunities stipulated by the new functions of deputies and their technical equipment. And we launched a rather large project to increase this potential,” Mirzoyan noted, thanking international partners who expressed their willingness to support this program.

In turn, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Armenia, Judith Farnworth highlighted in the program that the needs of the National Assembly were taken into account in the most thorough way, as well as the needs of the parliament leader. The program will also create a platform for MPs and citizens.

According to her, this program will create a platform for both parliamentarians and citizens who can interact more effectively.
