In a situation of ongoing disputes over the organization of international security structures, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has once again advocated the creation of an EU Security Council, DW reported.

The head of German diplomacy called this body a place where Europeans can work together in the fields of international politics and security within the EU institutions and beyond.

According to Maas, the UK should take part in the work of the EU Security Council, even after Brexit, and the US - to become an important partner of this body.

Recalling the recent US decision to withdraw troops from Syria without discussing it with its close partners, as well as Turkey’s offensive in Syria, which Ankara launched despite criticism from Europe and the US, and the French President Emmanuel Macron’s phrase that NATO is now in a state of brain death, Maas said questions about the reliability of partnerships, Germany’s security and the right path to the future today need to be discussed again.

According to Maas, 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the future seems more open and unpredictable than ever, and the issue of relations between East and West has long ceased to be a key international issue for Washington, turning into one of the issues, regardless of which government is in the White House.

According to the politician, today a historic moment has come for Germany to assume responsibility for maintaining both its own security and security in Europe.
