YEREVAN. – An argument took place in the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia today between Gevorg Petrosyan, a member of the opposition Prosperous Armenia faction, and Ararat Mirzoyan, the NA Speaker.

Petrosyan was presenting a bill on amendments and addenda to the Family Code. He proposed two amendments: to ban gay marriage by law, and to ban homosexuals from adopting children.

Petrosyan urged to preserve national values. "I and our faction are against the traditional value system being shot down," Petrosyan said, in particular. "Now whoever is going to vote against, would that person want to see such a thing in his family?"

NA Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan did not like this statement. Addressing Petrosyan, he said, in particular: "What are these personalized things?"

Petrosyan responded that what he said was not personalized.

The National Assembly rejected putting this bill on the agenda.
