Three major Lebanese parties have agreed to nominate former finance minister Mohammad Safadi as PM, Reuters reported referring to three sources familiar with the situation.
Saad al-Hariri resigned as PM on October 29 after an unprecedented wave of protests against ruling politicians accused of rampant corruption.
Consensus on Safadi’s candidacy was reached during a meeting last night between Hariri, a leading Sunni politician and representatives of the Shi’ite groups Amal and Hezbollah.
Safadi, 75, is a prominent businessman and former MP from the Sunni city of Tripoli. He was Finance Minister and Minister of Economy and Trade.
Lebanese Prime Minister must be a Sunni Muslim, according to the sectarian power-sharing system.
