The threat of flooding on San Lazzaro degli Armeni island is reducing, one of the monks of Armenian Mekhitarist congregation told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

He noted that water damaged the lower floors of the monastery, but the valuables are on the upper floors intact.

“Water caused significant damage. We have been pouring water out of the buildings for two days. Tomorrow the water level will rise again, but not to that extent. There is progress, but there is much to be done. The waves were so strong that they even broke the outer walls of the island”, he said.

The priest recalled the 1966 flood when the water level was much higher.
