Former Minister of Defense Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been elected President of Sri Lanka, AFP reports.

The 70-year-old former lieutenant colonel won 48.2% of the vote. His 52-year-old rival, Minister for Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa, won 45.3% of the vote.

The Sri Lankan electoral commission said the voter turnout was at least 80%.
