The biggest problem with Armenia’s relations with the Armenian Diaspora is the following: Which circle of Armenians have the power to represent the Diaspora and speak on behalf of the Diaspora? This is what Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated during his meeting with the abbots of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Venice and members of the local Armenian community at St. Lazarus Island today.

According to him, the Government of Armenia really wants to consult with the Diaspora over many issues. “We have tried, but we encounter a problem in practice. There are so many Armenian organizations in the Diaspora that it would be impossible for any government to consult with them. Consequently, our objective is to have an institution that will be legitimate and with which we can talk and say that we consulted with the Armenians of the Diaspora.

This is one of the key objectives of High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs Zareh Sinanyan, that is, to consult with a circle that is as wide as possible and establish an institution that will help put the relations between Armenia and the Diaspora at a new institutional level,” he said.
