The United States and China are close to ending the first phase of a trade agreement, President Donald Trump said.
Earlier Chinese president Xi Jinping said China wants to reach an agreement but is not afraid of rebuking if necessary.
“We have a deal potentially very close,” Trump told Fox News.
However, he added that China wants to make it much more “than I want to make it.”
China called for the abolition of existing US tariffs under the agreement, but US officials said instead that they might consider delaying a new round of tax increases, which should take effect on December 15.
