President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has conferred the Order of Friendship to First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva for her merits in the development and strengthening of Russian-Azerbaijani relations, reports RIA Novosti.

Aliyeva is in Russia on an official visit, and she received the state order at Putin’s residence in Novo-Ogarevo.

“I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this is an informed decision. I am conferring this order not because you have come to Russia as a high-ranking official of Azerbaijan, but because of your work and support to interstate relations at a high level, and Russia highly appreciates that,” Putin said.

Putin also said the name of the order itself shows what Aliyeva does for the Russian-Azerbaijani relations, and Aliyeva considered it a great honor that Putin referred to her as a genuine friend of Russia.
