Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan need to become a political factor during the talks over settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This is what coordinator of the Congress of Refugees from the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan Mariam Avagyan told journalists today.

According to her, Armenia still hasn’t given an appropriate evaluation of the elements of the 130-year genocide that were seen in Baku, Sumgait and other cities and villages of Azerbaijan in the late 20th century. “The Armenian authorities’ statements on the rights of the people of Karabakh are only made in response to Azerbaijan’s assaults, and this goes to show that we continue to be the victim and only respond to what is said. In addition, the revolutionary authorities aren’t making any statements on the events that took place in Baku, Sumgait, Nakhchivan and other Armenian-populated areas of Azerbaijan when both Baku and Ankara are still overtly speaking about their pretensions to create a union, the creation of which Armenia is hindering,” Avagyan stated.

The coordinator also talked about the possible deployment of international troops in Karabakh and added that the Defense Army the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is the sole guarantor of security in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Touching upon the Armenian government’s recent decision to provide apartments to 112 families, she expressed satisfaction with the fact that the ice has started to be broken.
