US President Donald Trump has criticized NATO members for their slowness in the process of increasing their defense spending, AP reported

Trump, commenting on the recent statement by the French president about the death of NATO's brain, called it very unpleasant.

“I think that’s insulting to a lot of different forces,” Trump said. “You just can’t go around making statements like that about NATO. It’s very disrespectful. You could make the case that they’ve been delinquent for 25-30 years,” Trump said, after talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. He added that the figure of 2% “is a very low number, it really should be 4.”

According to forecasts, by the end of this year, the European allies and Canada will increase defense spending by $ 130 billion since 2016. NATO predicts that they will spend another $ 400 billion by 2024.

The summit in London is taking place amid series of disagreements between leaders, which could undermine the credibility of the union.

Macron insisted that an endless debate on spending should be postponed so that NATO could focus on such important strategic issues.
