YEREVAN. – Azerbaijan’s actions cannot be described as unexpected, it is not a surprise, they are pursuing their standard policy by reiterating their positions, political analyst, adviser to Armenian president Tevan Poghosyan said.

“It was not a surprise for me. This was expected. The matter is the Armenian diplomacy has to give an appropriate response, presenting Azerbaijan’s comprehensively unconstructive position in the negotiations,” Poghosyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am in response to the request to comment on a document distributed by Azerbaijan at the OSCE.

He noted that the Armenian side has to pin hopes on its armed forces and the Artsakh defense army.

“We do not have allies in this regard. We should pin hopes on ourselves realizing the situation, improving security, including through development of economy, armed forces, science and so on. We have to remember that Azerbaijan would demonstrate the same position, and the task will be solved thanks to the spirit and combat readiness of a soldier. If we get tired, become weaker, we will have to ourselves. If we don’t get tired, don’t be too lazy and continue defending our own interests, we will win,” he added.

Asked whether the document suggest that the Azerbaijani side is reluctant to reach compromise, Poghosyan said this was not a new position.

“Have they showed anything like this [readiness for compromise]? No. And this is not a surprise. This continues for 30 years. The latest statements by Azerbaijani leadership are the proof. ”

Azerbaijan distributed a document containing its position on the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

“Azerbaijan adheres to the step-by-step approach in the settlement of the conflict, which is premised on the U.N. Security Council resolutions and the OSCE decisions, in particular the Budapest Summit decision of 1994,” the document reads.

However, Poghosyan added the document was neither a surprise, a disappointment, nor a deceived illusion and expectation.

“But there is a process, and we realize that we must participate in it, we must seek the return of Artsakh to the negotiating table, and promote our own interests. And, the papers will come and go. The issue will not be resolved on paper, but in a completely different place, and thanks to endurance, spirit of the nation as well as the ability to fully defend our interests”.
