The US and Morocco discussed efforts to isolate Iran within Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to the kingdom.

Pompeo’s audience with King Mohammed VI was canceled, apparently after an American diplomat extended his visit to Lisbon to meet with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Pompeo said he made progress during the visit.

There is a great relationship between the two countries, he added.

Pompeo met with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita to discuss the threat posed by Iran’s attempts to expand its regional influence, as well as conflicts in Libya and riots in the Sahel region.

Morocco severed relations with Iran last year, accusing it of sending weapons to the separatists in Moroccan-controlled Western Sahara. Morocco has warm relations with Israel, by the way.

According to Israeli media reports, the country's officials are hoping for a breakthrough in normalizing relations with the North African country in the coming days.

But a State Department official did not live up to expectations, saying that this issue was not discussed during the Pompeo talks in Rabat.

Egypt and Jordan remain the only Arab countries to have peace treaties and official diplomatic relations with Israel.
