YEREVAN. – The identity of the person being tortured by police officers—and whose video has been posted on the internet—is  known. Marina Ohanjanyan, Spokesperson for the Special Investigation Service of Armenia, told about this to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

"The identity of the victim and the time of the incident have been revealed," she said. “The victim has been interviewed, investigative and other procedural actions are underway; we cannot provide any further details at this time."

On November 21, a video containing torture was circulated on the internet. And according to the respective media reports, the police officers had allegedly tortured a person in one of the police stations.

In connection with this video, a criminal case was initiated on the grounds of going beyond official powers, which was accompanied by violence.

During the investigation by the Police Department of Homeland Security along the lines of the aforesaid video, a police officer was summoned to the department.

Within the framework of this investigation, and by the order of Acting Chief of Police Arman Sargsyan, Police Chambarak Division Chief of Narek Simonyan has been temporarily suspended.

Also upon Sargsyan’s instruction, the Police Department of Homeland Security is inspecting the video.

Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan also reacted to this video which triggered a heated debate on the internet, showing people hitting a person and trying to extract information from him. The Ombudsman had stated that a corresponding official letter with his signature would be sent to the criminal prosecution body.
