From December 7 to 10, the delegation of the National Assembly of Armenia led by Gayane Abrahamyan participated in the plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly of the Eastern Partnership in Tbilisi, reports the news service of the National Assembly.

During the Energetic Security Committee’s session, the Armenian delegation succeeded in leading the Azerbaijani delegation’s subsequent anti-Armenian initiative to close the nuclear power plant of Metsamor to failure. A major achievement was also recorded during the session of the Political, Human Rights and Democracy Committee (all 8 proposals submitted by the Armenian delegation were approved during the session).

“It is noteworthy that, during the discussions, the main topic of the reports on the state of politics, human rights and economy in Eastern Partnership countries represented by several regional and international experts was Armenia and the unprecedented course of reforms in the country,” head of the delegation Gayane Abrahamyan stated.

All the proposals of the Armenian delegation regarding the report under consideration by the Economic Committee were accepted, and the proposal of deputy of the Bright Armenia Party of the Armenian delegation Taron Simonyan was selected as the topic of the report for the year 2020.

The Social Affairs Committee also adopted a proposal that is strictly important for Armenia, and it concerned the issue of dissemination of xenophobia in the educational system that is very much linked to the Armenophobic policy led by Azerbaijan at the state level.

During the opening of the plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly on December 9, head of the Armenian delegation Gayane Abrahamyan presented the relations between Armenia and the European Union, the reforms and commitments, the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination and their security.

On December 10, the ten-year activities of the Eastern Partnership and the future strategy were presented for consideration during the session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. Head of the Armenian delegation Gayane Abrahamyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to the strengthening of relations with Europe and stressed that the protection of democratic values and fundamental rights must be one of the key priorities. In this context, she touched upon the massive violation of human rights in Azerbaijan, Armenophobia at the state level and the country’s destructive policy.

Member of the delegation Taron Simonyan, responding to the Azerbaijani delegate’s claim that Artsakh isn’t releasing the arrested citizens of Azerbaijan, emphasized that convicted persons are not prisoners of war, but terrorist assassins who abducted and killed minor Smbat Tsakanyan, abducted another civilian and injured a young woman.

Member of the Armenian delegation Mikayel Zolyan presented the course of reforms in Armenia and the recorded indicators as the Eastern Partnership’s success story and an exceptional example.

It was decided to hold the sessions of the committee of Euronest Parliamentary Assembly in Armenia next spring.
