Forty nine journalists were killed in the world in 2019 - this is the lowest figure in 16 years, ARF reported referring to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

At the same time, the head of the organization, Christophe Deloire, warned that the number of journalists killed in countries, presumably in peaceful conditions, is still menacingly high: 10 people died only in Mexico.

More and more journalists are behind bars. About 389 ended up in prisons in 2019, which is 12 percent more than last year. Almost half are in China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, 57 journalists are held hostage mainly in Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Ukraine.
