Turkey warns the US about “dangerous escalation” in case it lifts the arms embargo against Cyprus, reports AFP.

“The US government’s decision will hinder the efforts for settlement on the island and will lead to dangerous escalation,” the statement of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.

The decision is envisaged in the bill on defense expenditures adopted by the two chambers of the US Congress and forwarded to President Donald Trump for approval.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to respond to “initiatives against Turkey” by declaring that “the language of threats and sanctions won’t stop Turkey from its resolute steps to protect its national security”.

In 1987, the US set an arms embargo against Cyprus to prevent the arms race and contribute to a peaceful settlement.
