YEREVAN. – For me, the classic opposition is the political forces that have not welcomed [PM] Nikol's [Pashinyan’s] seizure of power. Ex-ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov said this at a press conference today.

According to him, today the two opposition forces in the parliament are opposition, whether or not they want it because according to the Constitution, there must be opposition.

“Both the PAP and the Bright Armenia [parties] have been in coalition with the authorities; they have been advocates of the so-called 'revolution,’” the RPA spokesman said. “We [the RPA] haven't been like that; we have been, or will remain, opponents of this regime."

He added that there is an unnatural situation in Armenia that is more typical of totalitarian countries. "During the independence of Armenia, no person or party has ever won the 3/5 of the seats in the National Assembly," Sharmazanov said.

He stated that Armenia needed snap parliamentary elections in 2020, and which would be ideological. "It is necessary for the parliament not to be deformed so that the opposition can counterbalance the opposition, that the threshold of 3/5 works," he added. “The country needs that snap elections be forced in 2020. The opposition has no leverage to oversee or balance the wishes of the authorities. No power in Armenia has had so much unlimited power that Pashinyan has today. This is not normal. 2020 should be a struggle for holding snap elections.”
