The Turkish Constitutional Court has rendered a verdict in favor of Wikipedia by deciding that blockage of the website is a violation of freedom of speech.

Turkey blocked Wikipedia in April 2017, accusing Wikipedia of participating in the “defamatory propaganda” against the country. This came after Wikipedia refused to remove content that was said to present Turkey as a supporter of the Islamic State and other terrorist groups.

Wikipedia had been blocked in line with the law that allows the government to ban websites posing a threat to national security. Wikipedia had refused to remove the content and referred to its disagreement with censure. After talks with Turkish officials and being defeated in lower courts, Wikipedia appealed to the Turkish Constitutional Court in May 2017.
