Armenian News - NEWS.am presents a daily digest of Armenia-related top news as of 22.01.2020:

·       Armenian contract soldier Artur Nalbandyan died as a result of an incident Tuesday at a military unit of the Artsakh Defense Army.

According to the Investigative Committee's spokesperson Naira Harutyunyan, he had lost his life due to the injuries he had sustained as a result of falling into a valley.

Nalbandyan was married and the father of four underage children.

·       The investigation continues over the death of Armenia NSS ex-chief Georgi Kutoyan, whose dead body was found on January 17 by his wife in his paternal apartment in Yerevan, with gunshot wounds.

According to the IC, no silencer was found on his gun.

In late December 2019, Kutoyan reportedly visited the apartment, where, after using alcohol, fired 35 irregular shots at the living room wall, from a legally owned pistol. During the investigation, no traces of violence were found on Kutoyan's body.

His funeral was held Monday in Yerevan.

·       Armenian Criminal Court of Appeal Tuesday denied the motion of Hovhannes Khudoyan, the lawyer of 5th Channel TV company owner Armen Tavadyan, detained under the case of Armenia ex-president’s supporter offering a person affected by the events of March 1, 2008 to refuse to testify.

Speaking to reporters, Khudoyan said Tavadyan was not present at the hearing as he anticipated such a judicial act. The attorney announced that he was going to appeal this ruling to the Court of Cassation, and later to the European Court.

Tavadyan was arrested after being suspected of giving false testimony and conclusion or bribing or forcing wrong translation.

·       An Armenian woman has been included in the new Lebanese government.

Vartine Ohanian has been appointed Minister of Youth and Sport. It is the first time in Lebanese modern history that an Armenian woman has been appointed minister, Arevelk reported.  Ohanian was director of the “Zvartnots” Special Needs Center.

·       Shooting occurred at the courthouse in Yerevan on Tuesday. Judge Tatevik Grigoryan appealed to the police department about damage to the window in her office. When examining the window, the police found a bullet. It was seized. Examinations have been assigned.
