The right to abortion is actively contested by the church and the conservative strata of society in the US. Right-wing politicians do not give up hope of seeking a review of the Supreme Court decision in 1973 in the Roe vs. Wade case, which affirmed women's right to terminate pregnancy. Doctors and abortion clinics are regularly exposed to pickets, threats, and sometimes direct attacks.
Marches for Life are held annually in January, gathering hundreds of thousands of participants.
