US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed hope that Iran would be held responsible for the Ukrainian International Airlines plane shot down on January 8 near Tehran, TASS reported.

During the joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr in Kyiv, he expressed his condolences amid the death of Ukrainians near Tehran.

According to him, he hopes Iran will be held accountable for its actions and for the lost lives of Ukrainians.

The Ukrainian president, in his turn, said that a clear and well-coordinated work during the tragedy with a downed Ukrainian plane in Iran was an illustrative example of effective cooperation with the US. He thanked US partners for support and help.

The Boeing 737 of Ukraine International Airlines crashed on January 8 several minutes after leaving Tehran's airport with 176 people died. The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces issued a statement on January 11, which admitted that the plane was mistakenly shot down by an air defense crew.
