The current head of the Togolese Republic, For Gnassingbe, won the presidential election, receiving 72% of the vote, Reuters reported

The politician was first elected president on April 24, 2005, succeeding his father Eyadema Gnassingbe, who reigned from 1967 to 2005. The opposition refused to recognize the results of the vote, calling on its supporters for protests. Riots began in the country, the victims of which were several hundred people, another 45 thousand fled to neighboring Ghana and Benin. On May 4, 2005, Fort Gnassingbe was sworn in, and in November his government reached an agreement with the opposition.

Gnassingbe was re-elected to the highest public office in 2010 and 2015.
