US president Donald Trump has visited Ahmedabad in India.

The US leader will take part in the Namaste Trump (Hello, Trump!) event, which will be held at Motera, India’s largest cricket stadium.

Before, Trump and his wife are expected to visit the Sabarmati Ashram, where the leader of the Indian national liberation movement, Mahatma Gandhi, lived and preached. Trump will speak with Indian PM Narendra Modi to an audience of many thousands at the Motera Stadium. Then the couple will visit the city of Agra to see the famous Taj Mahal mausoleum. After which Trump will arrive in New Delhi.

On Tuesday, he is scheduled to negotiate with the Indian PM, as well as Indian President Ram Nath Kovind. The US president will take part in meetings with representatives of the Indian business community and members of the American embassy. Dinner is scheduled at the presidential palace on Tuesday evening.

Trump's visit takes place amid intense trade talks between the two countries. In March 2018, the US imposed tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum - 25% and 10%, respectively. Fees apply to all countries that supply products to the US, including India. In response, in June 2019, New Delhi increased import tariffs by 28 commodity items from the US: tariffs increased by chickpeas (up to 60%), lentils (up to 30%), almonds, walnuts, apples and pears, some types of metal products, a number other goods.

In anticipation of the visit, Trump announced he would sign a trade deal with India if it would be beneficial to the US. Nevertheless, representatives of the US administration said that a trade deal is unlikely: Washington is concerned about the announced increase in protectionist measures by India. Following the visit, Trump expects to announce a number of major commercial transactions in several key sectors of the economy, as well as in the field of defense cooperation.
