EU member states have the right to suspend the free movement of people and resume temporary border control due to threats to public health amid coronavirus outbreak, said official representative of the European Commission Dana Spinant.

As she noted, according to the European Commission, any such actions should be based on scientific assessments and should be coordinated at the EU level, TASS reported.

The EC urged the countries of the community to refrain from unilateral actions, she added.

A local outbreak of coronavirus was recorded in Northern Italy, where the number of infected exceeded 230 people so far. Most patients live in the northern region of Lombardy. The number of deaths in Italy reached seven people. Local authorities impose strict quarantine standards; neighboring EU states are exploring the possibility of introducing border epidemiological control measures.
