YEREVAN. – Hraparak daily of Armenia writes: The previous day the government sent to the NA [National Assembly] draft amendments to the Criminal Code, which also stipulate the following provision: Public calls, justification or propagation of violence against an ethnic or social group on the grounds of sex, race, or political views are punishable by up to one year in prison.

Our source says: "Pay attention to the term ‘social’ group; various, including representatives of the LGBT community, transgender people can be under it. If the bill is passed, let's say, for example, [opposition Prosperous Armenia faction] MP Gevorg Petrosyan, who sometimes makes statements [against such people] in this ‘regard,’ can be sentenced to one year."

Yesterday, the bill quickly discussed and approved by the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.

The thing is that "this requirement is one of the components of the EU roadmap, one of the conditions offered by the EU."
