The European Commission said that Turkey has not officially announced a change in its refugee policy, adding that it expects Ankara to fulfill its obligations to control the flow of migrants to the EU.

Ankara pledged to stop irregular migration flows from Turkey to the EU and to improve the conditions for the reception of refugees in Turkey in exchange for EU support.

There were no official statements from the Turkish side about any changes in their policies regarding asylum seekers, refugees or migrants, the EC representative said at a briefing. According to their point of view, the EU-Turkey statement is still valid, he noted adding that they expect Turkey to fulfill its obligations arising from this statement.

The Turkish authorities have officially confirmed that there are no changes in official policy, he said.

Earlier, Reuters, citing a source, said that the Ankara authorities decided not to impede the entry of refugees into the EU. According to Turkish media reports, hundreds of migrants are heading to the Turkish border with Greece and Bulgaria in the hope of reaching Europe.
