YEREVAN. – The situation in Idlib, Syria, is quite tense, and there are conditions that it may worsen within 2-3 days. Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan, who is also Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, stated this during a meeting with journalists.
He recalled that after some casualties, the Turkish authorities announced the resumption of military actions in Idlib, and with the use of the groups that are under their supervision.
The analyst also stressed that for Turkey and Russia, Syria has become a territory where they are fighting to consolidate their positions in the region, and despite some tactical rapprochement, Moscow and Ankara remain rivals in the Middle East.
According to him, Idlib is one of the few parts of Syria that is still outside the control of President Assad’s government, and Turkey seeks to establish control over it in the hope that active processes will be launched for the political transformation of Syria.
