YEREVAN. – Combined with the evidence obtained in the criminal case being investigated by the Investigation Committee of Armenia, it was found out that one of the companies in the Abovyan city of Kotayk Province has occupied a 2,240-square-meter plot of land without authorization, and it carried out unauthorized construction there, whereas the Abovyan mayor had just fined this company 400,000 drams.

As a result, both unauthorized occupation of land and the unauthorized construction there continued for a long time, the Investigative Committee informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The mayor of Abovyan (Vahagn Gevorgyan) has been charged under the Criminal Code article on unauthorized seizure of state- or community-owned land, as well as failure to take measures in accordance with the law to stop and prevent the unauthorized construction of buildings and constructions.

A signature bond to not leave Armenia was chosen as a precautionary measure against him.

The investigation is still in progress.

To note, Vahagn Gevorgyan had defeated the ruling My Step alliance’s candidate in Abovyan's mayoral election. He is supported by the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party.
