Russian president Vladimir Putin backed the proposal allowing him to participate in the presidential election, Russian media reported.

Putin said, however, the amendment has to be coordinated with the Constitutional Court. If the Constitutional Court rules that such an amendment would not contradict the principles and main provisions of the constitution, this option would be possible, he said.

At the same time Russian president said there is no need in early elections to the State Duma as proposed by Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia.

He also called inappropriate the proposal to remove from the Constitution a restriction on the number of presidential terms. On Tuesday, a deputy from United Russia Valentina Tereshkova, came up with this initiative.

Putin said that the society should have guarantees of a regular change of power in the long run.
