YEREVAN. - The Armenian National Congress (ANC) plans to discuss Armenian Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Karen Andreasyan`s initiative to act as mediator between the Armenian authorities and the Opposition in investigating the March 1, 2008 case, the ANC Board member, Chairman of the Armenian National Movement (ANM), told Armenian News-NEWS.am

Irrespective of the Ombudsman`s initiatives, the ANC made its own demands on the authorities, April 28 being the deadline.

“The people, represented by the ANC, have made their demands and are now waiting for the authorities` response. And April will give answers to many questions,” Manukyan said.

Meeting the ANC demands may give serious impetus to the establishment of dialogue between the authorities and the Opposition.

The demands include releasing prisoners and solving the crimes related to March 1, 2008 events, and granting the Opposition the right to hold rallies in Liberty Square.

Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan is willing to act as mediator between the Armenian authorities and the Opposition. According to a message posted on his official website, the Ombudsman has restricted or no rights to defend the ones involved in the March 1 case. The Ombudsman has the right to perform an observer mission, which is performed by a number of local and international agencies.

Any mediators` task is to bring the sides` positions closer to each other and resolve the disagreements, says the message.
