The Political Science Association of Armenia (PSAA) applied to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan with a request to grant an amnesty to the participants of the March 1, 2008 events who are currently in jail.

“The Armenian President’s decision to grant an amnesty will be a responsible step worthy of the head of the state intended to stimulate the internal-political dialogue among all interested groups of society, to reach a pan-Armenian consensus about the priorities of Armenian national security and sustainable democratic development with the help of the consolidation of people’s efforts.

This initiative to transform domestic political conflict into a proper political competition implies a division of responsibilities regarding the destiny of our national state between the president of Armenia and all political powers, which is a necessary step intended to consolidate the nation in the procedure of productively ensuring the development and security of the Republic of Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, especially in the context of the threat of war from Azerbaijan.

The amnesty may serve as the basis for the consolidation of the Armenian and pan-Armenian progressive patriotic forces to use their powerful contribution in the name of constructive political cooperation intended to stimulate systemic and democratic reforms in the Republic of Armenia.

Your decision to grant an amnesty to those detained for the events of March 1, 2008 will be an expression of goodwill and contribute to the development of our country with the help of consolidating national efforts, to the establishment of its positive image in the international arena, and will also to strengthen national security ensuring greater cooperation with society,” reads the letter signed by Association’s President Hayk Kotanjian.
