The Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy has launched a campaign to get rid of disposable plastic.

The ministry plans to encourage the recycling of plastic water and beverage bottles. Plastic bottles will be priced at a few euro cents. The minister said that the market is given enough time to get rid of existing accumulated disposable plastics, as well as prepare for new environmentally friendly alternatives.

More than 26 million tons of plastic waste is collected annually in Europe, and less than a third part of it is being recycled.

Greece uses about 1 million plastic cups per day or 350 million plastic cups per year.
