Re-closing the US economy to combat the COVID-19 spread could be an even bigger headache for Americans, CNBC reported referring to the US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

“We can’t shut down the economy again. I think we’ve learned that if you shut down the economy, you’re going to create more damage,” Mnuchin said in an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer on 'Squawk on the Street.'

“And not just economic damage, but there are other areas and we’ve talked about this: medical problems and everything else that get put on hold,” he added. “I think it was very prudent what the president did, but I think we’ve learned a lot.”

The growing number of cases has made investors nervous that the states may have to re-close the business to try again to slow down the spread of coronavirus. This contributed to the fall of the Dow Jones Industrial Average index by 800 points and the loss of the S&P 500 Index by 2.6%.
