In regard to the case of second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, his pre-trial measure is not that big of a deal. What is important for me is the main case and the charge against him. This is what deputy of the My Step faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Hovhannes Igityan told reporters today.

“I’m wondering why the first instance court hasn’t been able to start examining the case for the past year-and-a-half. This is what’s interesting for me because I was a witness and was persecuted during the events of March 1, 2008. I’m trying to be objective and not talk about the persecutions against me and my family. I just want the court to examine the case. There is something that was troubling for me. During the recent trial, the judge was talking about the money for bail, and according to him, that was a value for Kocharyan. For me, the important thing is that money is the value for the judge. I don’t want this to become a precedent for criminals,” he said.

As far as the claims that this is political persecution against Robert Kocharyan are concerned, Igityan said the following: “You are asking a person who has seen political persecution and knows what it is. Believe me when I say that back then, political persecution was when the authorities would arrest people and all judges would do whatever the authorities wanted them to do. Do courts do what the incumbent authorities want them to do today?”
