The Prosperous Armenia Party isn’t a terrorist organization for a meeting to be inadmissible, right? This is what leading researcher at MGIMO Institute for International Studies Sergey Markedonov said during a teleconference today.

In the past, Russia was blamed for building ties with only the authorities and disregarding the opposition, but now when Russia works with the whole spectrum of political parties in Armenia, certain presses claim that the Russian ambassador’s meeting with members of the Prosperous Armenia Party is an expression of Moscow’s support to the political party.

Markedonov stated that, for some reason, nobody was surprised when the opposition and authorities signed a memorandum of mutual understanding at the seat of the US Ambassador to Georgia on March 8.

Markedonov explained that Moscow continues to work closely with officials, stating that President of Russia Vladimir Putin has held more meetings with Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan than with his predecessor and that there are intensive meetings between the foreign ministers and defense ministers of both countries.

Leader of Prosperous Armenia Party and head of the Prosperous Armenia faction Gagik Tsarukyan is charged under several criminal cases. On this background, Russia’s Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin had a meeting with representatives of all the factions of the National Assembly of Armenia.
