There is no testimony against former Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ara Babloyan. Therefore, there hasn’t been a confrontation. This is what Babloyan’s defense attorney Aram Vardevanyan told reporters today.

“During the election of the President of the Constitutional Court in 2018, all the factions of the National Assembly participated in the election. None of the factions viewed the process as unlawful, just like the recent event that took place in the National Assembly, that is, the vote for the amendments to the Constitution,” he said.

Vardevanyan stressed that the deputies of the National Assembly, including the parliamentary speaker don’t have and can’t have the duty to know the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly by heart. “There is no criminal case. The criminal prosecution is subject to termination, and Ara Babloyan’s actions were exceptionally lawful,” he added.

Today the court examined Babloyan’s attorney’s motion to terminate criminal prosecution against Ara Babloyan.

According to the indictment, in 2018, Ara Babloyan, as Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia and an official who was performing the functions of a state representative, abused his official powers that carelessly caused grave consequences, as well as committed official fraud.
