The United States will do everything it can to ensure that the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 does not pose a threat to the security of Europe, said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“We need further tools. We’re prepared to use those tools should you provide them to us,” Pompeo told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Last month, a bipartisan group of US senators introduced a bill that expands existing pipeline-related sanctions to include fines for parties providing insurance and pipeline services, Reuters reported.

Pompeo said companies linked to the pipeline understood the threat from US sanctions.
