An airplane carrying 500 kg of cocaine worth over £ 43 million to Australia has crashed in Papua New Guinea, The Independent reported.

The plane crashed shortly after taking off from the southern coast of Papua New Guinea.

According to AFP, the Australian police have detained five suspects linked to the Italian mafia. If guilty is confirmed, they face life imprisonment.

An Australian pilot was also arrested on charges of violating immigration rules.

The Australian police said the flight was organized by a Melbourne-based crime syndicate, whose members were going to pick up their cargo on the morning of July 26. The plane did not fly high enough, trying not to get into the radar field of observation.
