Greece will request an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers in connection with Turkey's decision to send a seismic research vessel to the eastern Mediterranean, the Prime Minister's Office said.

The Greek Foreign Ministry called on Turkey to immediately stop illegal activities that undermine peace and security in the region. Turkey dismissed Greece's objections, saying they had no legal basis and pledged to continue operations, Reuters reported.

PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Tuesday with FM Nikos Dendias and convened an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers.

The EU representative said that before making a decision on the request, consultations will be held between the member states. A meeting of EU FMs is scheduled for August 27-28 in Berlin.
