European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has joined a growing number of politicians calling for sanctions on Belarus following a harsh crackdown on protests sparked by the disputed presidential election results, Reuters reported

The head of the European Commission spoke ahead of an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers, at which sanctions will be discussed.

“We would need to find a careful balance between pressure against and engagement with Belarus President Lukashenko. We believe the EU should assume the role of a mediator as soon as possible,” said the letter, seen by Reuters.
