Armenian News - NEWS.am presents a daily digest of Armenia-related top news as of 18.08.2020:
- As of Tuesday morning, 145 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Armenia—a total of 41,846 cases—and 327 patients have recovered.
Also, eight more deaths from CVID-19 were registered, making the respective total 832 cases.
And 5,787 patients are currently receiving treatment.
A total of 1,067 tests were conducted in one day, and 186,661 tests have been performed to date.
Another coronavirus patient death from other reasons was recorded in Armenia, and the respective death toll in the country is 245 now.
- Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia Arayik Harutyunyan said that universities will reopen only for first-year students starting from September 1, 2020, and for all other students - on September 15.
"After a meeting with university rectors, we also stated that universities will determine the way the classes will be organized, either on-site or remotely. Universities will provide details on their websites and announce the list of subjects," he added.
- Armenia’s world boxing champion Israyel Hakobkokhyan, who was on an indefinite hunger strike in downtown Yerevan, has ended it Tuesday.
Israyel Hakobkokhyan was on a hunger strike for six days against the Istanbul and the Lanzarote Conventions, the Amulsar gold mine project, and some other matters.
- The citizen who blocked the road for the welfare of Armenia’s incumbent PM Nikol Pashinyan two years ago, today announced an indefinite hunger strike and sit-in in front of the Shirak regional administration, demanding the resignation of the same Pashinyan and his government;
Facebook user Karapet Poghosyan confirmed the information on his Facebook.
- Renowned singer Hayk Ghevondyan, who is known as Spitakci Hayko (Hayko from Spitak [city]), on Monday was summoned by the Armenia Police; Armenian News-NEWS.am learned about this from the press service of the police.
"Hayk Ghevondyan has been invited by the General Department of Criminal Police to get clarification," the police said.
- The criminal case against Gagik Khachatryan, former Minister of Finance and ex-Chairman of the State Customs Committee of Armenia, and his nephew Karen Khachatryan is in court.
Gagik Khachatryan has been charged under the Criminal Code articles on abuse of power, embezzlement or squandering, taking bribe, and official fraud.

Both are under arrest.
- Three people have been killed during the protests in Belarus.
Acting Minister of Health of Belarus Vladimir Karanik, who had earlier come out of the building of the Ministry of Health to talk to the doctors gathered in front of the building, declared that there are 158 people in hospitals, and 3 of them are in critical condition. All the other citizens are in stable condition, but not critical.
